"My volunteer experience at the HIV Orphanage is one I will never forget. I will never forget the kids’ faces, and their smiles. It is one of the best things I ever did."

"Volunteering at the HIV Orphanage has been a good experience for me. I was able to really bond with the kids even though it was a short time. The kids here are a lot rougher with each other compared to back home in Canada. This is normal and the nannies seem to let them discover their boundaries.

The kids need as much love and affection as any other regular kid. Physical affection is encouraged here and the kids thrive off it.

All the kids have their own unique story and if you get a chance to talk to Laura about them, some of it will shock you but make you love them so much more.

Leaving the HIV Orphanage will be hard for me. Some of the nannies and volunteers have been here for many years and I can definitely see why they stayed and how hard it is to leave."

Brittany Scharlow, Indiana, USA - HIV Orphanage Project

"Working at the Agape HIV/AIDS Orphanage has been the greatest experience of my life. When I first arrived I was a little worried about what I was about to get myself into. I couldn’t have imagined things would go as well as they have. The orphanage is nowhere near what I had expected. It is absolutely beautiful. There is an amazing amount of God’s love there, and everyday seems to be better than the one before. In such a short time, the children and I have created such great bonds. I can say that I truly do love each and every one of them. When I first arrived I seemed to look at them as a whole, but as time has gone on you learn that they are all so very different. It is so much fun learning their individual personalities, and learning how to take care of them in their own way. I believe God has really used me here, and I am so thankful to have been apart of these children’s lives. I will never forget this experience or any of the people I met here in Chiang Mai."

Your role as a volunteer is not only to make the children’s lives at the orphanage more enjoyable but to educate them through music, sports, computer, English education and art during the Thai summer (March – mid-May). You will pick one, or more, of the above areas and with direction from the full time staff, organize lessons or games with the children to enjoy and take part in.

Aside from organizing activities, the orphanage staff asks that volunteers spend individual time with the children, giving hugs, attention and love. Volunteers are asked to be flexible, for often times last minute changes or events come up which may disrupt a volunteer initiated or planned activity. Although the children at the orphanage are living with HIV, they show just as much excitement, love and life as children anywhere.

The children are at the orphanage because of losing their parents to HIV. In some cases, the orphanage accepts sick parents with HIV, so they can spend their last days with their children. Additionally, this allows an easier transition for the children, after the passing of their parents, considering they are already accustomed to the orphanage and it’s staff.

The orphanage is run by foreigners dedicated to the fight against HIV and AIDS. They ask that volunteers are flexible and patient, as there are many special activities that occur at the orphanage, especially during the Thai New Year (Songkran) which occurs in mid-April.

The orphanage requires an additional application form from all perspective volunteers. After completion of the additional application, orphanage staff will determine acceptance into the volunteer service program.

Friends For Asia additionally requires all volunteers in this project (and all other projects where volunteers work with children directly) to submit a certified police background check before volunteer service begins.

Although it’s not necessary for volunteers to be Christian, the administration of the orphanage would like for all volunteers to be aware and respect that the orphanage functions and was founded under Christian principles.
